On Monday 28th June, newly elected Senedd Member for South Wales West, Tom Giffard MS, visited Porthcawl Pharmacy at Porthcawl Medical Centre, to see first hand how they dealt with the Covid pandemic and how their services are changing.   Tom Giffard MS said:

“I would like to thank Justin and his team at Porthcawl pharmacy for taking the time to show me just some of their work that they do serving our community. The way in which they have dealt with their relocation and adapting to a pandemic, ensuring that prescriptions were promptly received by their patients. I was immensely impressed to hear how they have grown their patient database and how they are actively encouraging their team to upskill and learn more whilst in the role. The role Community Pharmacies have played, especially over the last 18 months, has been a testament to the service that they provide and I will stand-up and champion their role within our NHS, which we all hold so dearly.”

Justin Reed of Porthcawl Pharmacy said:

“The pandemic period has been challenging not only in terms of the increased volume of demands and prescriptions during the last year, but also because we relocated Porthcawl Pharmacy during the pandemic. It is a testament to the strength and professionalism of the community pharmacy team at Porthcawl Pharmacy that we achieved all this and kept our doors open continuously. We have a new purpose built premises now with two consultation rooms and a treatment room, placing us at the very top of the curve for the delivery of a modern, forward looking range of community pharmacy services for the Twenty First Century.”

Rhodri Thomas, Associate Director for Contractor Engagement at Community Pharmacy Wales, said:

This is a critical time for community pharmacy, as Community Pharmacy Wales negotiates with the Welsh Government to shape a new contractual framework in which funding will continue to be re-purposed away from dispensing services into clinical services. Establishment payments will no longer be linked to solely dispensing items but will also include the availability  of clinical services via community pharmacies, many oof which will be commissioned on an all Wales basis. With a very modern facility and a focus on services as well as prescribing, Porthcawl Pharmacy is an exemplar of community pharmacy in the future.”
