On Monday 21st June, newly elected Senedd Member for South Wales Central Joel James visited Sheppards community pharmacy in Margaret Street, Abercynon, to see first hand how they dealt with the Covid pandemic and how their services are changing.   Commenting on the visit, Joel James MS said

“I was delighted to have been invited to visit Gareth at Sheppards pharmacy in Abercynon and hear at first-hand how pharmacists are training to offer health consultations to residents. These consultation facilities are outstanding, and will help people access advice on a range of common ailments, without the need to wait for a GP appointment. Residents of RCT are extremely fortunate to have access to such great facilities, and I’ll be doing all that I can to see this model rolled out further across the South Wales Central Region.”

Gareth Hughes, Superintendent of Sheppards, said:

“We are grateful that Joel James took time out as a new Senedd Member to hear about our work at Sheppards in Abercynon. He saw at first hand the way in which the community pharmacy network has the potential to take on an ever increasing role in providing health advice in a convenient high street setting, and play a key role in reshaping the delivery of health care as we emerge from the Covid pandemic.”

Russell Goodway, Chief Executive of Community Pharmacy Wales, said:

“The face and scope of community pharmacy is changing rapidly and Joel was able to see not only what we currently do but the potential of what can be delivered over the next five years as the scope of our provision is expanded. The pandemic has shown the professionalism of community pharmacists at its best and we will build on that reputation as the community pharmacy network matures even further.”
