On Monday 21st June, newly elected Senedd Member for South Wales Central Heledd Fychan MS visited Sheppards community pharmacy in Margaret Street, Abercynon, to see first hand how they dealt with the Covid pandemic and how their services are changing. Commenting on the visit, Heledd Fychan MS said
“I was grateful of the opportunity to visit Sheppards Pharmacy on Margaret Street in Abercynon and hear first-hand about how community pharmacy is evolving, and the potential for evolving further. At a time when GP services are stretched to the limit, community pharmacy offers many solutions to ensure communities have accessible services close to home in a timely manner.”
Alwyn Fortune, Avicenna Pharmacy regional lead, said:
“It was good of Heledd Fychan to visit one of our flagship community pharmacies and hear first hand about the way in which we’ve kept services open and accessible throughout the Covid pandemic. As one of the first two independent prescribers in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Gareth Hughes illustrates the expanding nature of the community pharmacy network and our potential to take on an ever increasing role in providing health advice in a convenient high street setting.”
Rhodri Thomas, Associate Director for Contractor Engagement at Community Pharmacy Wales, said:
“The face and scope of community pharmacy is changing rapidly and Heledd understood not only what we currently do but the potential of what can be delivered over the next five years as the scope of our provision is expanded. The pandemic has shown the professionalism of community pharmacists at its best and we will build on that reputation as the community pharmacy network matures even further.”
