Health Minister Lesley Griffiths supports 'Action on Hearing Loss'

More than half a million people in Wales have a hearing loss – that’s about 1 in 6 of the population! Yet hearing loss is often so easily overlooked or misunderstood, causing people to experience unnecessary distress, frustration or isolation.
For those of us with hearing loss, being in a situation where they may have to understand complex things explained in a way that’s not familiar to them, often by people who are not used to communicating with them, can be very daunting. The only thing patients should worry about when they come into contact with healthcare professionals is their condition and its treatment. But people with hearing loss may also be worrying about whether they’ll be able to understand the pharmacist, whether they’ll hear their name being called to collect their prescription, or whether the background noise (amplified by a hearing aid) will prevent them from hearing the pharmacist talking to them.
That’s why from the 7th-12th May 2012 pharmacies from the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taf areas will be taking part in a campaign to help raise awareness of hearing loss. Patients will be able to take a test conducted over the telephone that help identify any hearing problems that could be causing or could cause in the future, hearing issues. Patients can also call into any pharmacy in these areas where staff will be happy to provide them with more information regarding hearing loss and assist them with any concerns they may have with regards to their own hearing or that of a close friend or relative.
