NPA promoting Community Pharmacies

NPA flies the community pharmacy flag in the centre of Cardiff
On Thursday 11th November 2010 the NPA organised a promotional event in St David’s 2 shopping centre in the heart of Cardiff.  The event took place over a 12- hour period and was promoted in advance on two radio stations, Swansea Sound and Cardiff Radio, and featured in an article published in the Western Mail.  An offer of a free BMI measurement was used as a lead in to the site and attracted a great deal of interest from all ages.  Those people who were within our target group were also offered a free healthy lifestyle assessment using the FINDRISC questionnaire.  As part of the assessment advice was provided on how the person’s individual risk score could be improved.   Additional supporting literature was provided where appropriate.  For Patients with a high or very high risk score a blood pressure measurement was also taken.
The opportunity was taken with all visitors to the site to talk about their current use of community pharmacy, to brief the visitors on the sorts of services that were now available from pharmacy and to encourage patients taking medicines to arrange a MUR appointment with their local pharmacist.  It was clear from feedback from people visiting the site that pharmacy was held in high regard and that they appreciated the ease of access to pharmacy services.
The event received excellent support from both Boots and Lloyds Pharmacy who supplied both staff and equipment.  There was a constant stream of people throughout the day with in excess of 300 people visiting the site.  A BMI reading was provided to 243 people and a lifestyle risk assessment was carried out on 67 people throughout the day
