Leanne Wood, Assembly Member for the Rhondda, dropped in to visit her Assembly predecessor Geraint Davies at his community pharmacy in Treherbert on Friday 27th January.
Geraint Davies took the opportunity to show Leanne the changing face of pharmacy, demonstrating the increased range of services which pharmacies in Wales are now delivering, including the treatment of minor ailments. He also explained that his pharmacy had been in the first wave of community pharmacies to connect to the NHS through the groundbreaking Choose Pharmacy IT platform
Commenting on the visit Leanne Wood said:
“While pharmacies in England are facing 11% funding cuts, I am pleased that here in Wales they are seen as an integral and important part of health service delivery and the funding cut isn’t happening. Plaid Cymru welcomes this investment and we will continue to work with the Welsh Government to ensure community pharmacies thrive and play an even bigger role in the health care of the future.
“Key to this success is an accessible, reliable IT platform between health professionals. I’m pleased that the new Choose Pharmacy platform is enabling this to happen and it is great news that the people of the Rhondda were amongst the first in Wales to connect together.”
Geraint Davies, who owns a community pharmacy in Treherbert and served as Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for the Rhondda 1999-2003, said:
“In my professional and political life I’ve always tried to give voice to the potential for community pharmacies to play a bigger role in providing basic health care services. It’s been a long wait but we are finally getting a Wales only pharmacy contract which is good news for Wales and good news for people in the Rhondda. I was delighted to welcome my friend and successor as Assembly Member for the Rhondda, Leanne Wood, to my pharmacy so she could see how first hand how we are doing things differently in Wales.”
Speaking for Community Pharmacy Wales, Russell Goodway said:
“Choose Pharmacy is a major innovation in maximising health information for patient care and we welcome Leanne’s commitment in helping make sure every patient and every pharmacy in her region can benefit from it.”
