David Melding experiences changing face of pharmacy
On 3rd March South Wales Central AM David Melding visited Mayberry Pharmacy in Penarth to discuss the importance of using your local pharmacist and see the increasing range of services being offered there.
Commenting on the visit, David Melding said: “In my role as a local Assembly Member and also as former spokesperson on health, I’ve always taken a keen interest in how pharmacies have developed. The community pharmacy sector is expanding all the time and I was delighted to see how the service offers flu jabs, smoking cessation services and a range of other health care improvements that are making the health service relevant and accessible.
“With the Welsh Government currently negotiating a new contract for community pharmacists in Wales, I will be keeping a close eye to make sure that pharmacists’ skills are utilised to the maximum but that the network is also ready to meet the challenges of the future.”
He also undertook to write to Cardiff and Vale Local Health Board to make sure that the maximum number of services are available in every pharmacy in the region, as currently Cardiff and Vale provide fewer opportunities to access services like smoking cessation through the NHS compared to every other part of Wales.
Russell Goodway from Community Pharmacy Wales said: “David really sees the potential for using the community pharmacy network to help bring about a localised service in which the over 700 community pharmacies in Wales play a full and expanding role in delivering health care, and we are grateful for his continuing and consistent support in maximising the role pharmacists can play in providing the best possible health care.”
